Buenos Aires: A vibrant and unconventional tribute to Pope Francis took place in Argentina’s capital as Portuguese DJ-priest Guilherme Peixoto, known as Padre Guilherme, hosted a large open-air rave blending electronic music with spiritual homage.
The event, held at Plaza de Mayo, brought together a diverse crowd of young and old, believers and non-believers alike, to celebrate the legacy of the Argentine-born pontiff who died in April 2025.
Music and Faith Intertwined
During the performance, massive screens displayed images of Pope Francis alongside Pope John Paul II, accompanied by symbolic visuals such as white doves. Padre Guilherme, dressed in priestly attire and wearing headphones, mixed techno beats with religious elements, creating a unique atmosphere of celebration and reflection.
From Parish Work to Global Stage
Ordained in 1999, Peixoto initially balanced his priesthood with a growing passion for music. Over the years, his DJ career expanded, eventually earning him international recognition and performances at major festivals.
His breakthrough came after participating in World Youth Day 2023, where his music connected strongly with younger audiences and reflected a modern approach to religious engagement.
Inspired by Pope Francis
Peixoto has often credited Pope Francis as a key influence, particularly the pontiff’s call to engage with people beyond traditional spaces and to connect with those on the margins.
This message encouraged him to pursue music as a way of reaching new audiences and promoting a sense of unity and positivity.
A Crowd Beyond Religion
The rave attracted a wide range of attendees, including many who had little or no connection to religion. For some, the event was a tribute to the late pope, while others simply came for the music and the atmosphere.
The historic square transformed into a festival-like setting, with lights, visuals, and dancing giving it the feel of a modern concert venue.
Connecting with a New Generation
Through his performances, Padre Guilherme aims to bridge the gap between tradition and modern culture. His work reflects a broader effort to connect with younger generations who may feel distant from institutional religion.
By combining electronic music with messages of peace and happiness, he continues a mission inspired by Pope Francis — bringing people together in unexpected ways.
