Milei Restores Press Access After Backlash

Buenos Aires: Argentina’s President Javier Milei has restored journalists’ access to the Casa Rosada after more than a week of restrictions that sparked widespread criticism from lawmakers, media organizations, and press freedom advocates.

Reporters were allowed back into the presidential headquarters for the first time since April 23, although new limitations on movement and access within the building remain in place.

Partial Restoration With New Restrictions

While most accredited journalists regained entry, authorities denied access to two television networks without providing an explanation. Inside the building, new security measures restrict movement through certain corridors and include the installation of frosted glass to limit visibility.

Additional procedures now require journalists to undergo stricter security checks and surrender press credentials upon exiting the premises.

Government Justifies Measures

Cabinet chief Manuel Adorni defended the decision, stating that the government supports press freedom but must also ensure national security within the presidential complex.

Officials cited concerns over unauthorized filming inside the building, accusing a local television channel of using smart glasses to record restricted areas without proper authorization. The channel has denied wrongdoing, claiming it had permission and that the footage contained no sensitive information.

Backlash From Media and Institutions

The initial closure of the press room, which had been used by journalists for decades, triggered strong reactions across Argentina. Critics described the move as an attack on press freedom and democratic transparency.

Condemnation came from political leaders, business groups, and the Catholic Church, highlighting growing concern over the government’s approach to media relations.

Rising Tensions With the Press

President Milei has frequently criticized journalists and media outlets, often using social media to accuse them of bias and misinformation. His rhetoric has drawn comparisons to the confrontational stance adopted by allies such as U.S. President Donald Trump.

Press freedom organizations have reported a significant decline in Argentina’s ranking on global indices, citing increased hostility and pressure on independent journalism.

Despite restoring access, the ongoing restrictions and strained relationship between the government and media suggest that tensions over press freedom in Argentina are far from resolved.
